Microblading & Microshading & Microfeathering

FAQs

Microblading

Microblading, also known as Eyebrow Embroidery is a procedure categorized under permanent makeup, but unlike traditional cosmetic tattooing, it is less invasive and is considered semi-permanent.

On average Microblade Eyebrows last 6 to 18 months.  Annual touchups are needed in order to keep your eyebrows looking great.

  • Allows you to enhance your natural shape or change it completely while looking natural

  • Great for people with little to no hair

  • Persons with oily skin will usually need additional or more frequent touchups when choosing Microblading over Ombre brows or 3D Nano Brows

  • Individuals with previously tattooed eyebrows may not qualify for Microblading depending on the amount of pigment remaining in the skin

  • Hair strokes in nature are somewhat random.  We strive to avoid “the PICKET FENCE” looking hair stroke as they don’t look completely natural.  New hairs should be placed in the same direction your hair grows so that they look like your natural hair
The procedure is done using a hand tool with ultra fine needles and each 'hair' is gently etched into the skin, giving an incredibly natural and realistic look. Microblading is excellent for those wanting to enhance their brows or who have little to no eyebrows, thinning brows from age or over tweezed brows. Pigments used are chosen to match the natural or desired brow color and skin tone will also be taken into consideration.

How long does it last?

There is no definitive answer to this one – it is dependent on many factors, such as:

  • The pigment used – darker pigments i.e. black and very dark brown last a lot longer than lighter shades.  A blonde to light brown microblade will usually need refreshing around 6-8 months (hence we normally will use a combination method for those wanting lighter coloured brows)
  • The method used – microblade does not normally last quite as long as powderfill/machine method – the pigment is implanted in thin strokes with microblade, which are not able to be placed as deeply in the skin as machine cosmetic tattoo.
  •  The density of pigment – i.e. a treatment that has been reinforced with a second adjustment appointment will usually be longer lasting
  •  Environmental factors such as exposure to UV light. Tanning and not using sun protection will fade cosmetic tattoos faster, and those with oilier skin, the tattoo will not last as long as in someone with a dryer skin.
  • After care – regularly tinting over the area, using glycolic acid based products or peels on the area, or regularly exfoliating over the brows can cause them to fade more quickly.
  •  Your health and overall individual phyosiology – some people retain pigment extremely well, others do not (however the adjustment appointment gives us an indicator of this and how much darker/how more more pigment needs to be implanted)
  • Generally, the treatment is considered semi-permanent; though in many cases (especially eyeliner and very dark brows) you will always have some pigment remaining in the skin. A touch-up treatment is recommended every 8-18 months for microblade (finer more natural strokes), and 12-24 months for power fill cosmetic tattoo/machine tattoo.

Microblading, Microshading, and Microfeathering: What's the Difference?

Microblading

Best for: Anyone who wants a natural look that lasts.

What is microblading: Microblading is a technique using a super-fine pen (technically, a bundle of 12 to 15 needles) to deposit pigment into skin. The tip is so fine, in fact, that it can create hair strokes that look legit. And the needles reach only into the superficial layers of the skin, which is what makes the method semi-permanent (versus permanent, like traditional cosmetic tattoos). Think of each stroke as a little paper-cut. (We know what you're wondering: Yes, it hurts, but your brow artist can numb the area first.) Compared to other techniques, microblading gives a very natural look and better simulates hair.

Microshading

Microshading

Best for: Anyone who wants brows to look more "done" (i.e. thick and filled in).

What is microshading: If microblading is like painting and microfeathering more like sketching, microshading is like an Impressionist got ahold of the blade. Microshading technique is done using either an electric hand tool or a manual tool, which creates a soft, powdered effect that resembles eyebrow powder. Instead of the hair stroke typical with microblading and microfeathering, microshading employs a stippling method, which uses repetitive dots of pigment. It's like the pomade or powder to microblading's pencil strokes—just semi-permanent. The overall effect more closely resembles the sort of brow you'd find on any given Instagram influencer.

Microfeathering

Microfeathering

Best for: Anyone who wants to lightly fill out the brows they already have

Microfeathering is a form of microblading. This is no-needle shaping method that's all about a natural, fluffy-looking brow. This is similar to that, but with pigment. Like microblading, she uses a fine blade to create tiny incisions. Pigment is then deposited into the incisions, resulting in an incredible natural-looking 'eyebrow hair. Unlike microblading, which typically creates most of the brow for you, uses your existing brow hairs as the "starting base" and simply fills it in as needed.

What you should know: Microfeathering is a little more high-maintenance than microblading. Consultation required ❗️to ensure that there's enough natural hair to help blend the pigment into your brows. 4- to 6 weeks later, depending on how your skin heals and responds, additional strokes are then added.

How long microfeathering lasts: It typically doesn't have the staying power of microblading because the pigmented stokes are much finer and natural looking. Depending on certain factors, like your skin type (oily skin won't hold the pigment as well), age, and skin care routine, microfeathering will usually last eight to 12 months, max.

FAQs

How long does it take?

For the first Microblading session, the entire procedure should take about 2.5-3 hours. During this session, the brow technician will shape and style the client’s brows for client approval. We then follow with pigment color selection.  Once the client is satisfied with the choices, we begin the procedure. The client is to come in for a follow up visit in order to have any minor necessary touch ups. The second Microblading session takes place after 4-6 weeks after the initial session. This session will take approximately 1.5-2 hours to complete.

How long does it take to heal?
The eyebrow area will be slightly red after the procedure and color will appear very dark. This is normal for the procedure and part of the healing process. The color will fade by up to 40% as it heals. In the following days, the eyebrows will continue to be dark and you will notice slight scabbing. Do not pick at the scabs as this may damage the skin and the outcome of the microbladed area. The eyebrows will lighten up in color as it heals. No down time is required after microblading procedure.  It takes approximately 7-14 days for the brows to heal over, and about 1 month for the color to fully set in. You'll notice the color is very light right after the two weeks after healing; the skin will have an opaque milky looking quality to it. This is known as the milk skin and is common in tattooing. This is due to the the tissue still healing from the inside out even though the surface of the skin is healed. True color will reveal itself once healed.

Is the touch up session necessary?
Yes! A touch up session after 4-6 weeks is necessary as everyone heals differently and outcome will vary. Certain areas may not pick up during first session and will need to be refilled.  Pigment color may need to be adjusted, brow thickness and more strokes can be added. Individuals with oily skin often require a deeper shade during the touch up session as the oils tend to lighten the pigment. It is a semi-permanent procedure, where the pigment is inserted into a basal layer of the epidermis. Every client’s skin is different and the client’s skin type, texture, maturity and oiliness affects the healing process and pigment retention. Severe fading and undesirable scabbing may occur. Generally, the results are impeccable, but again, the final result will differ from client to client. Most importantly, your touch up session is when we refine your brows to ensure it looks perfect and retains the color for the whole year!
Can I get my touch up session sooner than 4 weeks?
Touch up sessions should not be done earlier than 4 weeks after initial microblading session as pigment color has not fully settled into the skin. Most importantly, this is to prevent scar damage as the tissue requires time to completely heal.

Will I still need to remove a new brow hair growth?
Yes! Microblading does not affect a new brow hair re-growth. I am giving you an amazing brow template that will make your re-growth maintenance so much easier!

Is it painful?
The pain level for the procedure is considered mild to none.  Prior to the procedure your brow technician will apply a topical anesthetic to numb the area, and also reapplied during the procedure.  Everyone responds differently to anesthetic; depending on the client, the feeling of the procedure has been described as light cat scratches to not feeling anything. Topical anesthetics used may contain lidocaine, prilocaine, benzocaine, tetracaine and epinephrine. After the procedure, redness and slight swelling in the area is normal.  Clients describe the area feeling similar to a light sunburn.  Clients can take Tylenol but not aspirin or ibuprofen.

How long does it last?
Since microblading pigments are not implanted into the skin as deep as traditional tattoos, the area will naturally fade overtime.  Microblading typically lasts 1-3 years, depending on skin type (normal, oily, dry), age (youthful/mature). Skincare routine will also affect the lasting effect of the pigment: patients who tan, uses products with AHA or Glycolic Acid with fade faster as your skin will resurface faster. Each individual's color retention within the skin will vary. To maintain the brows looking fresh, a touch up is suggested every 12-18 months. Clients can let the microbladed area fade over time, but please note a slight shadow may remain.

What are the Pre and Post care procedures?
In order to achieve the best results, it is best to follow the pre and post care instructions.

Prior to your procedure, clients are advised of the following:
*Avoid alcohol and aspirin/ibuprofen and any vitamins that may thin your blood for 72 hours.  *Avoid tanning so we can assess your natural skin tone.*No face scrubs or chemical peels at least two weeks prior.*Feel free to come in with their brow makeup on so our technician can see your every day look you prefer. *Reference pictures of shapes and colors of brows are always welcomed. After Care Process

The Microblading healing process can be quite suspenseful for new clients.

•Attached is a little chart for my clients so they have some reassurance while they are healing

• It is important for anyone considering a cosmetic tattoo to know that it is a MULTI-STEP PROCESS!* Some may even require more than one

• Touch-Up appointment to achieve desired results.

 •  In addition to this, it takes a total of 4-6 weeks to see final healed results!

• It's important not to get the brows wet during the healing process other than wiping your brows on day one.(5-7 days)

• Do not immerse brow area in water for 14 days

When showering, make sure to avoid face area. When cleaning or washing face, make sure to avoid brows and clean around it.  * Use the healing balm given to you at your appointment on the day one after drying your brows.

•On days 2-7 only apply thin layer of healing balm when brows look dry, feel tight or itchy.

 •  Keep eyebrows and face out of the sun for 14 days

Then after 14 days use sunscreen to aid longevity of your eyebrow tattoo.

* As instructed apply the healing balm with freshly washed hands or a Q-tip.  * *Never touch the procedure area without washing your hands immediately before. * It is very important to dab eyebrows completely dry after shower or during strenuous workouts to prevent moisture from penetrating. * Do not scrub, rub or pick at the epithelial crust that forms. Allow it to flake by itself. If it is removed before it is ready the pigment underneath it can be pulled out.*  Do not put makeup on the brow area for a minimum of 10 days. * Microbladed area is an open wound, using makeup may cause infections.

* After your brows are completely healed, you may go back to your regular cleansing and makeup routine.

* Avoid scrubbing the area.

 * Use sun block after the procedure area is healed to protect from sun fading. 

FAILURE TO FOLLOW AFTER-CARE INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN INFECTIONS, PIGMENT LOSS, OR DISCOLORATION.

The master is not responsible for any retention or healing issues if after-care is not followed correctly.

* We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone who we deem not suitable for this procedure or for any other reason. Our brow technicians make the decision to microblade an individual based on their own discretion. Hair stroke technique will not work on everyone  *

Risks and complications?
We take all proper precautions for a safe session by using sterilized equipment, new needles and in a sanitized environment.  Should clients follow our pre and post care instructions, there should be minimal risks or complications .  Although allergic reactions to the pigments are rare, it could be possible for certain individuals. We suggest a pigment patch test for individuals who have high skin sensitivities or are sensitive to:Topical makeup productsGold, silver and nickelHair dyesPatch tests should be performed 5-7 days prior

What if I do not like it?
As with all cosmetic procedures, individuals should not make their choices lightly.  We always recommend clients do their research, understand the procedure and compare different artists' work and portfolio when making their decisions. Our brow technicians will do their utmost to shape and style the eyebrows to the clients satisfaction prior to the procedure. Every effort will be made to achieve an even appearance, but please realize our faces are never perfectly symmetrical. Uneven appearance can be fixed during the touch up session. Pigment discoloration and color correction can also be fixed during the the touch up session. Microbladed brows will eventually fade away if no additional touch ups are done.
